Major Raid In Europe

In a major raid earlier this week European anti-piracy officials raided a piracy operation at a Staffordshire, UK car boot sale, leading to the remove of over 20,000 fake discs with an estimated value of over £500,000 (US$940,000). The raid, which was led by local Staffordshire police and supported by the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association, Staffordshire Trading Standards, Federation Against Copyright Theft, and Customs and Excise, uncovered a total of 20 stalls selling pirated games, films, music, and business software.

The raid has significant meaning for Nintendo because this raid is the first in which fake GameCube optical discs were found. Previous raids had not uncovered any fake GameCube discs. In addition to pirated discs, officials found 30,000 contraband cigarettes, and Viagra (sildenafil citrate) tablets, although it is unknown if the tablets were the real product from Pfizer or a counterfeit version.

As a result of the raid, two people have been reported for offenses in violation of the Trade Marks Act of 1994. The two violators are likely to face prosecution. “This case illustrates the way in which piracy poses a threat to members of the public, allowing titles containing unregulated adult-rated content to be sold illegally without the enforcement of our rigorous ratings system, which is strictly adhered to by legitimate retail outlets.
