Medal of Honor Must Move 3M or No Sequel

Once Call of Duty began dominating the console shooter landscape the Medal of Honor franchise took a little break. Now, EA is set to reboot the series in a more modern setting, and for that they have some pretty big goals. So big, in fact, that the company has declared that the new Medal of Honor must move 3 million units if the publisher can be bothered to keep the franchise running.

Executive producer Greg Goodrich has claimed that if the game doesn’t sell at least 3 million copies then “I’m not going to be able to do another one.” Why? Mostly it’s a budget issue, as EA has pretty much bet the farm on Medal of Honor being their tent pole game this holiday season, and if the title doesn’t sell big then that’s a whole lot of money out the window. Furthermore, EA is really testing the waters to see if this franchise can stand up to Call of Duty, and if Black Ops soars while MoH flops then it will be clear that the public is only interested in one military shooter, and it happens to be published by the competition.

So is three million copies a reasonable goal? Under most circumstances for a game of this caliber sure, it wouldn’t have much trouble at all. The only problem is it’s set to come out in the same window as not only Black Ops, but also Halo: Reach, two big-time shooters that are going to eat up a lot of gamers’ budgets over the coming months. Had MoH arrived in the spring or summer then the title’s success would be a no-brainer, but right now the deck is a little more stacked against EA than normal.

On the other hand, the company has had a lot of success with the Battlefield: Bad Company franchise, so if it can keep that mojo going with MoH then everything should be fine. Our prediction; it may take a while, but Medal of Honor will easily surpass the 3 million mark and the franchise will stick around for the foreseeable future.
