Big news from the Tokyo Game Show – Capcom has just revealed a new entry in the Devil May Cry franchise, and it’s a bit of a shake-up from previous title Devil May Cry 4. As such, it’s titled simply DmC, indicating it stands apart from the numbered series, which has remained largely the same for the last nine years.
It stars a younger, smirking Dante, with dark hair and a grittier vibe (though he maintains his sexy shirtless look). Most importantly, though, Heavenly Sword and Enslaved developer Ninja Theory will be taking the reigns on this one, marking the first time the developer has worked on an already existing IP.
Via Destructoid, DmC will “depict a duplicitous world where nothing is ever as it seems and the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. Spurred into action by the promises of a trusted relation, Dante bursts into this world intent on revenge at any cost.
“DmC will retain the series’ signature mix of sword and gunplay but add additional weapons, all new powers and a revitalized gameplay system as players encounter the game’s devilish mix of enemies and navigate the rich, interactive environment.”
Capcom must be impressed with the current state of Enslaved, else they wouldn’t trust Ninja Theory with one of their most important franchises. Though Enslaved doesn’t hit shelves until October 5, the game went gold on September 3, meaning it’s essentially done.
Both Ninja Theory and Capcom must be holding their breath right now as the release of Enslaved approaches, as its success or failure will likely influence how potential players regard DmC. Hopefully Ninja Theory can bring their signature style to the Devil May Cry series.
