If you are reading this, then it is probably safe to say that you have at least a passing familiarity with Mario Kart. And perhaps you’ve even seen the toy versions, featuring electric cars with remotes that zoom along a track, just like so many licensed racetracks in the 80’s and 90’s.
Now, Takara Tomy has produced something that’s like that, but at the same time, rather different.
Siliconera reports that their set, called “Choro Q Hybrid! Mario Kart Wii Vs.”, features not only a racetrack with detailed cars based on characters from Mario Kart Wii, but also implements the various special items which have helped to make Mario Kart so famous over the years.
Five items are included, and a special LED in the controller lets you know which one you are in possession of. The items are:
- Mushroom – gives the driver a speed burst.
- Banana peel – attacks an opponent behind you.
- Koopa shell – attacks an opponent in front.
- Thunder – freezes your opponent.
- Star – protects the driver from an attack.
As Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, and Wario zip along the raceway, the items will actually affect other racers. For example, have Mario use a Mushroom, and he’ll rocket ahead with a burst of speed.
The game is poised to go on sale in June, but sadly, there is no word on if anyone in the U.S. might pick this one up for distribution. Which is why it’s a lucky thing that toys aren’t region-coded, for anyone who wants one badly enough.
