Which PS4 games will you be playing this October?
There's no denying September was a pretty big month for PlayStation 4. Atop the list of games releasing last month was Bungie's Destiny, but although it had exclusive PlayStation content, Sony's new console didn't actually see any true exclusives. That'll change in October as PS4 users will go behind the wheel of Driveclub, the new racing game from Evolution Studios. Of course, there's some nice support from third-party publishers as well. Below are the most notable PS4 game releases for October 2014.
Skylanders: Trap Team is the fourth installment in the popular action-adventure series which brings to life toy figurines in a digital world. Skylanders: Trap Team is adding to its collection a new line of figurines called “Trap Masters.” These new Trap Masters, which have been released from Cloudcracker Prison, must be captured by you — the Portal Master — using the new Traptanium Portal. Once captured, you can then play as these Trap Masters in the actual game.
Alien: Isolation is a first-person survival horror game with an emphasis on stealth mechanics. The game, set fifteen years after the events of Alien, puts you in the role of Amanda Ripley, daughter of the movie series’ protagonist Ellen Ripley. Amanda, now a Weyland-Yutani employee, heads to a large trading station where the audio log detailing the events from the Nostromo has been discovered in order to discover the mystery surrounding her mother’s disappearance. But with an Alien having already infested the station, Amanda is in for some terrifying surprises.
Moving LeBron James to the Cleveland Cavaliers isn’t all that’s going to be new in NBA 2K15. Proving to be more than just a roster update, one of NBA 2K15’s biggest features is 2KTV, an “innovative, player-focused, in-game broadcast program” created as a way to present game-related features, NBA exclusives, and 2K community-inspired content. Of course, there’s other things to be excited for as well, including MyTEAM and the usual solid gameplay.
Driveclub was originally supposed to be a PlayStation 4 launch title, but a delay was necessary to give the team “more time in order to deliver on their vision.” That vision is one in which players can group up in clubs and complete challenges to earn fame. Driveclub has an interesting release format in that a slightly stripped down PS Plus Edition will be made available for free to PlayStation Plus members. Alternatively, you can opt to purchase the full game with all of the content available. Earlier this month, developer Evolution Studios outlined their plans for post-launch support of Driveclub, with DLC plans spanning through June 2015.
Sleeping Dogs was first released for PS3 (and Xbox 360) in 2012. After some surprising success, Square Enix has decided to re-release it for PS4 and Xbox One as a “Definitive Edition,” complete with improved graphical resolution and gameplay, setting and audiovisual quality changes based on community feedback, and all of its previously released DLC.
PopCap Games’ wildly addictive puzzle will offer native 1080p, 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 4. I don’t know if that’s necessary for the game’s enjoyment, but I guess it’s always fun to boast about resolution. In terms of gameplay, Peggle 2 on PS4 will include five different Peggle Masters to play through, Trials to test your skills, as well as Peg Party and Duels for multiplayer.
The Evil Within is a new survival horror game developed by Tango Gameworks. The real excitement, however, comes from the fact that it’s being led by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil and the the father of survival-horror, at the the helm — so you know it’s going to be scary. Early previews of The Evil Within were a bit underwhelming, but having gone hands-on with the game for extended periods at preview events, I can safely say that it’s as scary as advertised.
Just Dance 2015 is exactly what it sounds like; you dance to popular songs, following the on-screen dancer to earn points. New to the series in Just Dance 2015 is the “Community Remix” mode where you can dance to songs that have other players on the screen instead of the dancers. Check out the full track list here.
Based on the popular animated television series, The Legend of Korra on PS4 is a third-person beat ‘em up developed by Platinum Games. It’s one of two games being developed based on the same plot from the series. In it, you control Korra, the series’ heroine, as she fights villains from the first two seasons of the series.
Bandai Namco’s Lords of Fallen has drawn comparisons to Dark Souls. Though the argument can be made that it’s not as difficult based on early previews of the game, I managed to get my ass kicked enough times. For those of you more interested in story, it follows that of convicted criminal Harkyn who has been released from prison in order to fight back against an army of long-defeated gods.
