Saints Row ‘Hell Week’: Five things we’re excited to see in Gat out of Hell

Welcome ladies, gentlemen, demons, and saints, to our first installment of Hell Week here at GameZone. Celebrating this week’s launch of Saints Row: Gat out of Hell, the new standalone expansion for Saints Row IV, we’ll be hosting a series of thematically related features. Starting today, we’re taking a look at five things we’re excited to see in Gat out of Hell (even though we may have already played the game).

Playing as Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington

Easily two of my favorite characters from the Saints Row franchise, Gat out of Hell lets you play as either, or both, in your adventure to save the boss from the depths of hell. Johnny Gat is a brash, loud-mouthed, hot-headed Saint with an itchy trigger finger. Comparatively, a bit more reserved, but perhaps equally as cocky, Kinzie is not without her own sense of sarcasm and wit. We’re excited to see how this dynamic unfolds as the two journey through hell together.

Volition’s take on Hell

The transformation Saints Row has gone through is pretty amazing actually. Since the original Saints Row released in 2006, each game has gotten bigger, wilder, and crazier. And now, we’re in Hell; or rather, we’re in Volition’s vision of Hell with a Saints Row take on it. The possibilities are endless, and though the underworld might normally be a pretty somber place, we’re fairly confident that the iconic Saints Row wackiness will shine through.

A musical!?

As a man married to a musical theater major, Volition caught my attention with that recent musical trailer. I mean, Johnny Gat singing and dancing? What’s not to love about that? I don’t know if Gat out of Hell will have more of that, but as a someone obsessed with Frozen, I sure hope it does.

The Seven Deadly Weapons

Saints Row has always been filled with wacky weapons. Late last year, Volition gave us a sneak peek at seven new ones in Gat out of Hell. Playing off the whole Hell theme, the Seven Deadly Weapons are a series of legendary weapons that embody the Seven Deadly Sins: Lust Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride. Each of the weapons are specifically designed to fill one of the inventory wheel slots, and obtained by completing a unique task specific to the Sin that they try to embody. I don’t know about you, but I like the idea of causing mayhem while resting comfortably in an armchair packed with dual-miniguns and heat-seeking missiles.

It's a Bird…It's a Plane…It's Gat with wings!

Saints Row IV didn’t actually have flying. It was more of a falling with style mechanic. In Gat out of Hell, Johnny and Kinzie are blessed with angel wings, allowing them to take to the skies in complete freedom. The Saints Row franchise has always had unique methods of transportation, but I think this tops them all. I imagine, given the emphasis on this new ability, that Gat out of Hell will feature some sort of missions/objectives that make use of these wings. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Saints Row: Gat out of Hell is due out for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Although available for $30, you can also opt to get the Re-Elected bundle for $49.99. This includes Saints Row IV: Re-Elected (the Xbox One/PS4 re-release of Saints Row IV) as well as the Gat out of Hell expansion at a $10 discount then if you were to buy them both individually.
