Sony Online Entertainment has recognized the unique opportunity to get themselves in on the ground level of India’s emerging online games market. Sony is currently in talks with several Indian developers and is preparing to establish a local studio as early as next year.
“We need to have Indian content for our games and we are looking for local partners,” said SOE’s VP of business development and international operations, Dave Christensen, at a gaming conference in Mumbai.
The relationship would revolve around Sony’s Indian partner sourcing creative talent for the studio.
This isn’t a completely out-of-nowhere move by any means. Christensen hinted at such a move back in April in an interview with Next Generation.
“Because of the infrastructure that’s being built there as well as Internet gaming cafés that they’re trying to build, there’s a good potential market [in India].”
The end result could be Indian-based games making a global impact. Interesting prospect indeed.
