Sports Sunday: NBA 2K11’s Press Conference Now in Video Form

Last week I touched on the subject of NBA 2K11‘s new, post-game conferences in the game’s My Player mode, and this week, 2K Sports has given us access to what it will look like in action via a video, which can be seen right here.Â

The video shows a star of the Lakers answering a question about trade rumors. The video goes through several different options, showing your player responding with either professionalism, arrogance, loyalty, or indifference.Â

In concept, the idea of having a post-game press conference is a really great idea. After all, part of what’s great about My Player, and other similar modes is that they allow you to step into a player’s shoes. Whether that be an existing player or one you create (which could be you), it’s a fantasy aspect of the game that bridges the gap between sports title and RPG. You build stats, control only your player, and now, with My Player’s post game conferences, you respond and build a name for yourself as well.Â

The video shows that there’s somewhere to star twitch the idea of post-game press conferences, but it also seems somewhat hastily put together. A female reporter asks whether rumors affect your play on the court but she does so in a stiff voice. The graphics seem a little rough around the edges as well, though 2K has never been known for stellar graphics. More often than not they tend to focus on addressing gameplay before graphical enhancements so let’s chalk the graphics up to the game itself and not just the press conference.Â

The video also leaves numerous questions about the press conferences. For instance, do they have numerous different voices to accompany different player types? Do they only have a handful of questions that get asked after each game or are they dynamic and based on the situation? It’s going to be pretty tough for a game to accurately recreate the experience of being in a press conference after a game, but at least having a certain range of diversity in answers would be great.Â

It’s an interesting looking addition and hopefully, it turns out to be a success. It would be great to see other sports titles implementing the same sort of interaction with your player.Â
