Telltale’s All-Star Title is…a Poker Game?

Revealed a couple of weeks ago, acclaimed adventure game developer Telltale Games posed quite a question. What do you get when you take the most iconic characters from one of the most beloved shooters of all time, one of the most beloved adventure franchises of all time, one of the most beloved online cartoons of all time, and one of the most beloved webcomics of all time?

Apparently, you get poker.

Telltale has announced Poker Night at the Inventory a downloadable poker game set for download via Steam on both PC and Mac later this year. The title will feature The Heavy from Team Fortress 2, Sam from Sam & Max, Penny Arcade’s Tycho and Strong Bad of Homestar Runner fame facing off in a high-stakes poker matchup, all at a cost of $5.

This incredibly, incredibly random creation is a part of Telltale’s new “Pilot Program” in which the developer is creating new game concepts past their established success in the adventure genre. According to Telltale CEO Dan Connors, the game will be considered a success if it sells upwards of 100,000 to 200,000 units, after which the developer will work on following up the title with more games not just featuring game characters, but celebrities and musicians as well. This probably won’t be a problem, given Telltale’s track record within the industry, the popularity of Steam, and the fact that it only costs a Lincoln.

Things aren’t all sunshine and sandviches though. In an inexplicable decision, the game will be devoid of multiplayer and will be strictly a one-man affair, a shocker considering card games are made to, generally, be played with other people. The game will have fully-voiced trash talk from opposing players (though one has to wonder if Tycho will be getting a voice) so it should have that going for it.

In all, this one looks like it’ll be worth betting on when it releases later this year.
