Two more Spiderman titles on the way after Spider-Man 2

The numbner one pop-culture icon of the 21st century (fictional character or not) is going to be immortalized even futher with two new games on the way after the sure-fire platinum hit Spider-Man 2 hits shelves around June 30th to coincide with Spider-Man 2.

This comes as little surprise as since the time when Spiderman games actually started possessing quality (with the original 3d spiderman game on PSX) the titles have all sold extremely well. Such retail success not only makes Activision money, it also puts them in better and better graces with marvel comics, giving Activision a HUGE amount of popular material to makes games from.

The first of the next two Spiderman titles will be based on the already-announced 3rd Spiderman movies. Since nothing has been revealed about the plot of that movie [ed note: $10 says the main villain is the Lizard], Activision has yet to reveal any details about what the player can expect to be doing during the game.

Furthermore, the upcoming Spider-Man 2 game is the first Spidey game to feature the free-roaming gameplay that GTA3 popularized, and Activison’s on THUG capitalized on. Whether or not the same system is deemed successful by consumers within a superhero game will likely play a part in whether or not the gameplay mechanics for Spiderman 3 incorporate this gameplay philosophy or not.

The second game (actually being released before Spider-Man 3 game, sometime in 2005) is a far more exciting announcement for yours truly, having collected Spidey comics for over 12 years now. Activision has announced a game based on the comics, which we can only hope means more stylized graphics, a range of Spidey’s best enemies (Venom anyone?), and a story written by comic writers. No specifics on the game have been announced yet, but once again it is likely that if the open ended gameplay catches on, it will stay.

It has not been announced which consoles either game will be released on. However, since the comic-based game is due sometime in 2005, it is likely that it will appear on one, if not all, the consoles on the market at that time (including handhelds). The Spider-Man 3 game, which will likely be released whenever Spider-Man 3 is released in theaters, will more likely appear on one or more of the next generation consoles.

EXCELSIOR! [ed note. Please dont sue]
