Midway has announced that Unreal Tournament 2007, now going by the name of Unreal Tournament 3, will appear on the Xbox 360 along with the PC and PS3 later this year.
Generally considered the franchise that robbed the online deathmatch crown from Id’s Quake franchise (right before Counterstrike stormed on the scene and dominated both), Unreal Tournament 3 is poised to provide the same fast-paced run-n-gun action that the series is known for. Forget cover systems, forget squad-mechanics, Unreal Tournament 3 is all about insanely powerful weapons, over-the-top map design, and adrenaline-fueled twitch reflexes.
Unreal Tournament 3 will be bringing a host of improvements to the franchise. In addition to the gorgeous visuals, the AI bots will be smarter and more aggressive, new weapons will round out the already-impressive arsenal of weaponry, and new gameplay modes will put players skills to the test. In addition to the expected Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes, Unreal Tournament will include the new Warfare mode, as well as several unannounced game types.
Epic and Midway are promising a deep offline campaign mode as well, which would be a welcome change from the uninspired series of challenges that composed the single-player component of previous entries. Furthermore, players will be able to enlist their buddies’ help in the campaign via online co-op. Hopefully Epic will have learned their lesson from Gears of War, and will provide more advanced and intuitive matchmaking options for their second title on Xbox Live.
AMN will have more information and media for Unreal Tournament 3 as it becomes available.
