The Last of Us gets a TV show… kinda

You know the setting in The Last of Us where entire cities are overrun with nature, structures crumble, and roads are left with abandoned and rusty vehicles? Well that's coming to television. NBC's new fall drama brings us to a post-energy United States — specifically Chicago. Looks like all those years of the Cubs losing had a negative effect on Wrigley Field.

In the trailer for Revolution, something happens where all energy disappears. Batteries, power plants — you name it. Cities go dark. Planes fall from the skies. No internet! However, in a rush, a character backs something up onto a weird, silver USB pendant. 15 years later, we end up seeing the outcome of the loss of energy. That character ends up getting killed, trusts the pendant to his daughter, played by Tracy Spiridakos of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and tells her to seek out her uncle, Billy Burke from the Twilight movies, because he can get her brother back (he was taken by militia).

They're all tied together by the mystery of what happened to the energy and that there might be a way to get it back. We even see a sneak of that at the end of the trailer. Billy Burke kills a bunch of militia with a sword. Tracy Spiridakos gives off a Katniss Everdeen vibe. And the setting is just like The Last of Us.

Revolution is being directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and written/produced by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Star Trek). With these two huge names attached to it — and Abrams coming off of the flop Alcatraz — maybe NBC will be a little more lenient if the show doesn't get off to a fast start. I'm a J.J. Abrams fanboy, so I know I'm going to watch it. I'm genuinely curious as to why all energy has disappeared, and I can't wait to see the mystery unravel. If there's something that J.J. Abrams does write, it's creating a compelling mystery and keeping you guessing. There will be unexplained plot elements, things that'll drive you mad, and weird happenings, but I believe that this show has potential.
