The Flash might be the best comic-based show on television. Even early in to season two there have been so many characters implemented from the books that it is a comic nerd's slice of paradise. It has a flare for wit in the writing and SFX that can captivate any person who has decided to follow the show.
This episode, 'Flash of Two Worlds', begins with the introduction of Jay Garrick. For those of you who are not familiar with the kettle helmet donning two lightning bolts, he is the original Flash. The appearance of Jay opens up a whole new world, or in this case multiple worlds. The cast actually said “Multi-verse” which made me cry tears of joy. Though the implementation of the multi-verse as a whole seems very ambitious, I can't wait to watch the exploration. The whole idea behind the multi-verse in the comics was to create a fresh face for our already beloved characters with new paths and adventures for them to delve into. Professor Stein, as he was explaining the multiple universes to STAR Labs, stated “let’s call it Earth-2”. The Earth-2 line was revamped a couple years ago and created parallel universe for silver-age comic personalities so they could match up to their golden-age counterparts.
Now that we’re all on the same page with the beginning of the multi-verse, let’s talk about what is going on in Central City. After Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) walks into STAR labs, the team questions the integrity of his story and puts him through the ringer with tests to try to prove that he’s the parallel speedster Barry Allen (Grant Grustin) in another world. In the midst of testing, a fire happens and Barry is pinned up against a new meta-human, Sand-demon. Barry is defeated because he doesn’t know how to manipulate the sand-like attacks with his speed. It’s from Garrick that he learns he needs to implement throwing lightning from his inertia that he can turn the molecular sand-like strikes into glass.
We are introduced to Patty Spivot (Shantel VanStanten), who is a pretty common occurrence in the DC universe. She's classically a lab assistant in Central City, as well as a love interest of Barry Allen’s at one point. For television purposes, she is a cop and is trying to join the meta-human task force and is well-versed in many areas of science. Her character seems to be providing some comic relief to the ever-looming guilt of last season. The few interactions with Barry have been playful and filled with Monty Python references — I like her already. She gets kidnapped by Sand-demon and the only way to get her back is by Jay and Barry teaming up to create a diversion. They succeed and it seems that now the team accepts Jay Garrick for who he is.
We also discover that Cisco (Carlos Valdez), our fun-loving comedic relief on team Flash has begun to develop some kind of psychic sense, or as he calls it “vibes” about things that are happening. So much so that he can pinpoint an exact location of where it is happening. This is interesting.
We were are introduced to Zoom this episode. Zoom is traditionally associated with Wally West, so I find it interesting that he’s here. He’s a speedster super-villain and he is nasty. His goal is to kill all of the speedsters in all universes to ensure that he is the only one.
Also, Harrison Wells is back, well sort of. The man that we know as Wells is really Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanagh). You can tell by the sinister smile that something serious is going on. Perhaps he will be the major tie-in of Earth-2.
There’s a lot going on. What I want to know is when Caitlin Snow is going to become Killer Frost. Her name is clearly out there, and there have been promises of her in Season two. The problem here is I see no indication of evil in Ms. Caitlin Snow, and don’t know how the writers are going to get there. Danielle Panabaker has been quoted on how the costume will look and stated that we will see her sooner than we think.
