Now it’s time for the “final” chapter of Resident Evil: Revelations 2. I threw up the air quotes because there are technically two more chapters after the game ends. Chapter 4: Metamorphosis is setting up for a pretty brutal conclusion though. Will you be left wondering with a bad taste in your mouth? Well that’s up to you now, isn’t it.
The title alone, you know, as the Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” gives the players a sense that there is going to be some sort of change coming in the near future. The whole game spoon feeds up Kafka quotes and musings, it’s only fitting that the final chapter is named after one of his better known novellas. In a nut shell, Gregor wakes up as a giant insect (commonly a cockroach in translations) and never knows why. The rest of the story is him trying to adapt to this new form in daily life, work, and relationships. Once Gregor dies, his family feels relief. I won’t make any connections here, but let that all sink in.
This time around it is Claire and Moira that have the short episode. I’d say it was about a half hour long. I know what you’re thinking, what sort of conclusion is that? Well, remember how good episode 3 was to the ladies, that’s probably why. Don’t worry though, you still get your conclusion and a bit more. I surprisingly died a bunch of times in this episode. Mostly I was testing Capcom’s story telling creed but that’s all riddled with spoilers. Feel free to watch my walkthrough if you’re curious though.
The real meat and potatoes comes in with Barry and Natalia. The game introduces highly obnoxious poisonous gas that you can’t stay in too long without dying. A little fresh air makes it all better though – think of it is an underwater part in a game without the swimming (I’m not talking Water Temple from Ocarina annoying tier though). The gas does set up some tense moments and quick decisions which I can always appreciate. There was a puzzle involving a moving platform, that in retrospect wasn’t that bad, but man it stumped me for a hot minute.
The duo will find themselves in a mansion / lab that will dump a bucket of nostalgia over your head until you’re soaked in glee. It felt as close to the original Resident Evil while not being the original Resident Evil that I’ve felt in a really long time. Dare I say I was giddy? Perhaps. While I could ruin countless things for you here, I won’t, just know that I found it incredibly satisfying. If you want a real-final boss, you get it.
As previously mentioned, there are two more mini episodes after this that I really hope you didn’t play before playing the entirety of the campaign. Even mentioning what they are about or what you’re doing is laced in spoilers. To read my full review of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 look no further. Once you finish you can play a new game+ or lose yourself to Raid Mode; both are excelent options.
